Pertronix

Pertronix Ignitor Electronic Ignition Systems – Information on purchasing the Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition modules for about $65 – $40 to $60 less than what the well-known Triumph parts suppliers are charging.

If you want to get rid of those bloody worthless ignition points and install a breakerless system I believe the Pertronix Ignitor module is the best for the money. Yes, there are more expensive systems that offer rev. limiters, double spark, etc. but, they are more expensive. For the average Triumph driver I don’t think you can beat the Pertronix system. The best prices I have found on the web for Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition modules is at Warehouse Auto Parts in California. As of October, 2004, they were charging about $65 for most Triumph applications. They can be reached at:

But, because Pertronix catalogue list only some of the Spitfires and the TR7, Warehouse Auto Parts has only the Spitfire and TR7 on their web site. If you are lucky enough to own one of these Triumphs and want a Pertronix Ignitor module, simply click on this link to visit the Warehouse Auto Parts web page that lists the Spitfire and TR7 and buy the module. 

For all other Triumph applications, the Pertronix Ignitor modules are listed by the Lucas distributor part number. Once you determine the Pertronix Ignitor module’s part number, give Warehouse Auto Parts a call.

TR2 thru TR4A
To determine which Petronix Ignitor module fits your TR2 to TR4A, you will need to know:

  • If your Triumph is a positive or negative ground. They came from Triumph with positive ground but many have been converted to negative ground
  • If there is a vacuum advance or not
  • Number of cylinders – 4
  • Distributor model number

To determine if your Triumph is positive or negative ground simply look at the positive terminal on the battery. If the cable goes to the body, it is positive ground. If the cable goes to the starter solenoid, it is negative ground.

The vacuum advance unit is a round disk on the left side of the distributor. It has a tube running from it to the carbs.

The distributor model number is stamped into the side of the distributor as shown in the picture below.

TR2 Distributor – EXAMPLE “DM2”

According to the Moss catalogue, all TR2s are DM2 distributors. TR3 thru TR4A, can be Lucas model numbers 23D, 24D, or 25D. You MUST check your distributor.

Now that you know the grounding, if there is a vacuum advance, 4 cylinders and distributor model number, click on the link below to open the Pertronix catalog .PDF file and find the Ignitor module for you Triumph. NOTE: the first page is the Ignitor part number. The second page is the part number for positive ground systems.

For example:

  • A positive ground, without vacuum advance, model DM2 would use a Pertronix Ignitor model number LU-149P12.
  • A negative ground, with vacuum advance, model 23D would use a Pertronix Ignitor model number LU142A

TR250 & TR6
To determine which Petronix Ignitor module fits your TR250 or TR6, you will need to know the Lucas distributor model number and number of cylinders – 6. The distributor part number is cast into the top of the distributor as shown in the picture below.

1971 TR6 Distributor – EXAMPLE “22D”
Yes, the picture is intentionally upside down. That is they way it will look when you look at it while standing next to the car.

I believe all TR250s and TR6s are Lucas 22D but you MUST check your distributor.

Now that you know the distributor model number and number of cylinders (6), click on the link below to open the Pertronix catalog .PDF file and find the Ignitor module for your TR250 or TR6. NOTE: the first page is the Ignitor part number.

For example, a 22D distributor would use a Pertronix Ignitor part number LU-166A.

Other Triumphs
Look for the Lucas distributor model number, number of cylinders, existence of a vacuum advance unit and use the Pertronix catalogue (link above) to find the Pertronix Ignitor part number.
